I'm Ari Lamstein,

a software engineer who enjoys working on data science projects.

I currently work as a Staff Data Science Engineer at a marketing analytics consultancy. I have 20 years experience developing software in areas such as data science, web development and video games. I have also worked as a technical trainer and independent consultant.

Outside of work I often write open source software to analyze public data sets. I also learn and experiment with modern data science tools. I write about both topics on my blog, which is read by thousands of software engineers and data scientists worldwide. You can subscribe here:

My past independent projects include:

  • Creating choroplethr, a suite of R packages that facilitate the creation of choropleth (i.e. color-coded) maps. Choroplethr connects to public data sources, allowing you to explore current and historic demographics. It has been installed hundreds of thousands of times and is the subject of three online courses. I have spoken about it at countless meetups and conferences.
  • Co-founding the R Consortium Census Working Group, which promotes R as a language for analyzing US Census Data. Together we published A Guide to Working with Census Data in R.
